An updated draft Character Area Assessment Document has been prepared by Steyning Parish Council as part of its aim to work to enhance and promote the historic and cultural heritage of Steyning and safeguard its unique identity and its natural and built environment.

Input has been received from Mr Chris Tod of Steyning Museum and the draft has been approved by the Conservation Officer and the Planning Policy Advisor at Horsham District Council.

In this Conservation Area Character Assessment Document we identify works which we are asking Horsham District Council to include in an Article 4 Direction, which removes permitted development rights for unlisted residential properties in the Conservation Area. We are also seeking to enlarge the existing Conservation Area.

The final document will be included as a supporting evidence document in the Neighbourhood Plan for Steyning, Wiston, Ashurst and Bramber; the Neighbourhood Plan will be subject to a statutory consultation however, the Steyning Conservation Area Character Assessment Document will be a supporting evidence document informing the Neighbourhood Plan and will not become an adopted statutory document.

Steyning Parish Council’s character area assessment document forms an evidence base which HDC will use to inform the forthcoming Conservation Area review for Steyning.

We hope that residents will feel as we do that we are fortunate to live in such an historic town and that it is worth having additional protection to preserve it for future generations.
